Bone Grafting (Ridge Augmentation)

Bone grafting is a procedure that is sometimes necessary to replace missing bone and assists the body to regenerate its own bone. This procedure is necessary when the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies or is resorbed.  Often times atrophy and/or resorption will leave poor quality and quantity of bone needed to place dental implants.  Before bone grafting was available, patients with this condition would be poor candidates for dental implants.  Bone grafting now allows:

  • the ability to grow bone where needed
  • offers the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width
  • restores esthetic appearance
  • restores function of the teeth

The type of bone graft needed depends on the location and size of the defect.  Options include:

  • your own natural bone
  • an artificial, synthetic, or natural bone substitute
  • combination of both of the above

New bone growth will strengthen the grafted area by forming a bridge between existing bone and the graft material.  Over time newly formed bone will replace much of the grafted material.
