Orthognathic Surgery (Jaw Surgery)

Orthognathic surgery may be necessary when orthodontic treatment (braces) is unable to correctly align the upper and lower jaws.  When the jaws are not properly aligned it can create difficulty with normal function and chewing.   Orthognathic surgery allows for the proper alignment of the jaws with respect to each other and the face and greatly improves function and appearance.

Orthognathic Surgery may be indicated to correct the following:

  • difficulty eating, chewing, or function
  • jaw deformities (large or small jaw)
  • open bite or deep bite
  • protruding jaw (overbite or under-bite)
  • chronic jaw pain
  • obstructive sleep apnea & breathing problems

Most jaw and facial deformities are a result of growth & development. Other causes include birth defects, trauma, and pathology. Regardless of the cause, orthognathic/jaw surgery allows the versatility to correct a great variety of skeletal jaw and facial problems. Some examples are illustrated in the videos below. Please visit the "Examples of Specific Conditions" tab for additional animations.
